HSE First Aid at Work 2-day Refresher

The course consists of the following:

• Duties of a Designated First Aider

  The aim of the award is to refresh/update existing designated first aiders in order that they may renew their First Aid at Work certificate (NB: the current certificate MUST still be valid at the time of commencement of this course).

  Many small firms/organisations will only need to make minimum first-aid provision.  However, there are factors which might make greater provision necessary.  HSE offer the following guideline which may be helpful when assessing needs.

  CATEGORY OF RISK	Nos. employed at any location	Suggested number of First Aid personnel
  LOWER RISK, e.g., shops & offices, libraries	Fewer than 50	At least one appointed person
  	50 -100	At least one designated first aider
  	More than 100	One additional designated first aider for every 100 employed
  MEDIUM RISK,e.g, light engineering, assembly work, food processing, warehousing	Fewer than 20	At least one first aiders
  	20 -100	At least one designated first aider for every 50 employed(or part thereof)
  	More than 100	One additional designated first aider for every 100 employed
  HIGHER RISK, e.g., construction, slaughter house, chemical manufacture, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments	Fewer than 5	At least one appointed person
  	5 - 50	At least one designated first aider
  	More than 50	One additional designated first aider for every 100 employed
