Emergency First Aid

The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981

Core content of the course is:

  • the duties of a first aider - appointed

    The course provides the range of skills and depth of knowledge required to enable a person to fulfil the main duties of a first aider, i.e., that of preserving life and stopping any condition from worsening.

    Many small firms/organisations will only need to make minimum first-aid provision.  However, there are factors which might make greater provision necessary.  HSE offer the following guideline which may be helpful when assessing needs.

    assembly work, food processing, warehousing
    Fewer than 20
    At least one first aiders
    20 -100 At least one designated first aider for every 50
    employed(or part thereof)
    More than 100 One additional designated first aider for
    every 100 employed
    HIGHER RISK, e.g., construction, slaughter
    house, chemical manufacture, extensive
    work with dangerous machinery or sharp
    instruments
    Fewer than 5 At least one appointed person
    5 - 50 At least one designated first aider
    More than 50 One additional designated first aider for
    every 100 employed
